“You’re from Venus? No, I’m from Earth..." You've heard the famous saying that "men are from Mars and women are from Venus", but exactly what does this mean? Is it perhaps because of a belief that women and men use different language? Many theorists, such as Robin Lakoff, have argued that there is a huge difference in how different genders use their language. For instance, Lakoff states that women use hedges which is when you add lines such as "well" , "you know" and "kind of" and insinuates that they're not being assertive and trying to show politeness however other theorists with similar views, such as Deborah Tannen, shows the idea that men see language as a way to assert dominance. In some ways, I do agree with some of these points, as Tannen says, the change begins in childhood, however I'd argue that this is not because of the sex we were born as but because of the society we grew up in. 1) Zimmerman and West's theory would be relevant when talking about the data as their theory is that men are more likely to interrupt in a mixed-sex conversation which the theory proves as men interrupted more on average. 2) Geoffrey Beattie could also be relevant as it could be used as both being supported as well as being refuted by the data as it shows there are more interruptions which could be because they are interested in the topic and want to be involved but on the other hand we don't know this for sure, especially as it was mainly men who interrupted so seems suspicious as to why they were only interested. 3) Pamela Fishman's theory would be relevant to the data as she states that women use tag questions due to male dominance which is shown as more men interrupted more per term on average compared to the women.

This is because they state that in mixed-sex conversations men are more likely to interrupt women and the data shows on average that men did interrupt in the meeting more than the women Geoffrey Beattie The data would not support their theory as they state that interruptions don't necessarily reflect dominance and that interruptions may have occurred because the person has interest and wants to be involved. O'Barr & Atkins The data would mot support their theory as they believe women can interrupt as well because of a study they did in a courtroom that showed that women were more assertive and interrupt but witnesses, no matter what gender, would use Robin Lakoff's "weak language". This suggested that it is "powerless language" not "weak language". The article is talking about how many people who don't want to identify as as something replace it with the letter 'X'. For example, changing your last name to X so you don't "belong" to your husband or father. It also talks about whether the term 'women' should become 'womxn'  and people's viewpoints on the subject. Anne Lister is mentioned at the beginning and Deborah Cameron writes about the issue of Lister being labelled as non-binary when in fact she was a lesbian.

The article talks about how they have introduced ten new titles for transgender and non binary people. They have included titles such as Mx and Ind which is short for individuals. The reason Hsbc have done this is because they want everyone to feel welcome and not like an outcast
